Chocolate Rice Porridge

This is for all the chocolate lovers out there! If you crave for chocolate in the morning, this treat is perfect for you. This is a breakfast and snack staple in the Philippines. It is frequently served with a drizzle of milk and slivers of dried, salted or smoked fish on the side. I heard some have tried it with peanut butter. In my opinion, it tastes much better than oatmeal and other breakfast cereals that comes in a box.

1 cup glutinous rice (short grain)
6 cups water
200 gms. unsweetened chocolate (tablet or powder form)
1/2 cup sugar
milk

If you cannot find unsweetened chocolate preparations, reduce the amount of sugar to suit your taste.

  1. In a bowl, wash rice in running water until the water clears.
  2. Put the water in a pot. Transfer the rice to the pot, cover and bring water to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and uncover the pot.
  4. Cook the rice for 10-12 minutes stirring occasionally to prevent burning the rice.
  5. Add chocolate and sugar. Mix until a thick and even consistency is acheived.
  6. Remove from heat and serve with milk.

Have fun with the presentation by drawing designs while drizzling with milk. Hope this sweet bowl brings a happy start to your day!
