A Date with Myself

When I got married (barely two and a half years ago), I got a new teaching job and my husband and I moved into our first home. My classes were early in the morning, but my husband leaves for work at high noon.

Ironically, I found myself eating alone more often than before, both in and out of the house. At first, it was kind of weird for me, but I am getting the hang of it. Here are some ways I learned to deal with it.

Dining in

  1. turn up the TV
  2. play your favorite music
  3. use your best dinnerware
  4. take your time and enjoy your date with yourself

Usually, when I eat at home alone, it’s just leftovers for me. Luckily, Epicurious has some recipes for single serving. I am planning on trying them out soon. Have you tried some of them? The Ice Cream with Chocolate Caramel Sauce looks really yummy.

Dining out

  1. eat at ‘off’ hours
  2. choose restaurants that have solo tables
  3. choose restaurants that serve food in solo portions
  4. insist on a good table with a nice view
  5. tip well

I keep myself occupied by reading or by watching people passing by. A number of suggestions are also found at Solo Dining. One thing is for sure: I get to know ‘me’ much better, now that I am comfortable with dining alone. How do you cope?

Welcome to the Food Lava Blog

Hello everybody and welcome to the our little corner of the web. It is a blog by us, the creators of Food Lava, an upcoming website for people who love to talk about food and other related stuff. We hope to tell you more about it later.

In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy the articles we will be posting here. We will cover a variety of topics like cooking, dining, nutrition tips and more. We might also write restaurant and recipe reviews.

Please don’t be intimidated by the seeming seriousness of the topics. We know some food blogs are known to be terribly serious and sometimes boring. But we will try to make the articles both informative and fun. So don’t be afraid to leave “non-serious” comments below and to our future posts.
